What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? A Simple Guide for Business Owners

Short answer: GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude — to understand, trust and mention when someone asks them a question. It is to AI answers what SEO is to Google results.
Why GEO matters now
For twenty years, getting found online meant one thing: ranking on page one of Google. That still matters. But customers have started asking AI assistants instead — “Which CA firm in Jaipur handles GST for exporters?”, “Best ERP for a small garment factory?”, “Who makes fast websites for clinics?”.
The difference is big. Google shows ten results and lets the customer choose. An AI assistant usually writes one answer and names only a few businesses. If you are not in that short list, the customer may never see you at all. Google itself now shows AI Overviews above the normal results for many searches, so the same shift is happening inside Google too.
How AI assistants decide which businesses to mention
AI assistants answer in two ways. Some answers come from what the model learned during training. Many answers — especially about businesses, prices and “best” lists — come from a live web search the assistant runs in the background, after which it summarizes the pages it found and often shows them as sources.
Either way, a few signals decide whether you get named:
- You rank for the question. If your pages already rank well in search, they are far more likely to be picked up when the assistant searches.
- Your facts are clear and consistent. Your name, services, location and specialties are stated the same way on your website, Google Business Profile and listings.
- Your content answers the question directly. AI tools prefer passages that give a clean, complete answer they can quote.
- Other trusted sites mention you. Directories, industry associations, news sites and reviews act as independent proof that you are real and good at what you do.
- Machines can read your site. Structured data (schema markup) and open access for AI crawlers remove guesswork.
Research backs this up. The 2023 paper that introduced the term GEO, by researchers from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and others, found that adding clear citations, relevant quotations and statistics to content made it noticeably more visible in AI-generated answers — up to around 40% in their tests (Aggarwal et al., 2023).
GEO vs SEO
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank in search results | Be mentioned and cited in AI answers |
| Where it shows | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot |
| What it rewards | Relevance, links, speed, user experience | Clear facts, direct answers, evidence, trusted mentions |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, enquiries | Mentions, citations, AI referral traffic |
The key point: GEO does not replace SEO. It sits on top of it. A business with a slow, thin website will struggle in both.
7 things you can do this month
1. Write a clear “fact block” about your business
On your homepage and About page, state in plain sentences who you are, what you do, who you serve, where you are based and since when. For example: “XYZ Engineering is a precision CNC machining company in Ludhiana, Punjab, serving automotive and agricultural manufacturers since 2009.” Use exactly the same wording style on your Google Business Profile and social pages.
2. Add schema markup
Schema is code that tells machines what your page means. At minimum, add Organization or LocalBusiness schema on your homepage, Service schema on service pages and FAQPage schema where you answer common questions. Test it with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema.org validator.
3. Answer real questions — first sentence first
Collect the questions customers ask on calls and WhatsApp. Turn each into a heading, and answer it in the very first sentence below, then add detail. This “answer-first” style is exactly what AI tools look for when they need a quote.
4. Add evidence
Replace vague claims with specifics: numbers, timelines, price ranges, certifications, named methods and links to credible sources. “Most installations finish in 3–5 working days” is far more quotable than “fast service”.
5. Get mentioned on sites AI already trusts
Complete your Google Business Profile, and keep consistent listings on relevant platforms such as Justdial, IndiaMART or industry-specific directories. Join your trade association's member list, contribute expert quotes to industry publications, and keep your LinkedIn company page active. Every honest, independent mention strengthens the case for recommending you.
6. Let AI crawlers in — and add an llms.txt file
Check your robots.txt file. If it blocks crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or GPTBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot, those assistants may not be able to read your pages. Google's AI Overviews use the normal Googlebot, so if Google can index you, you are eligible there. You can also add an llms.txt file — a short Markdown summary of your business with links to key pages, proposed in 2024 as an easy way for AI tools to understand a site.
7. Start tracking
Make a list of 15–20 questions your ideal customers would ask an AI assistant. Once a month, ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and note whether you are mentioned, how you are described and which sources are cited. In Google Analytics 4, watch for referral traffic from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.
What GEO cannot do
No one can guarantee what an AI model will say — be wary of anyone promising “guaranteed ChatGPT ranking”. AI answers also change from one day to the next. GEO improves your odds by making you the clearest, best-evidenced option in your field. Avoid shortcuts like fake reviews, spammy listings or hidden text; they can damage both your Google rankings and your reputation.
Think of GEO as reputation management for machines: be clear about who you are, prove it with evidence, and make sure trusted sources say the same thing.
FAQs
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap. SEO helps you rank in search results. GEO helps AI assistants understand, trust and mention your business in their answers. Strong SEO is the foundation that GEO builds on.
How long does GEO take to work?
Technical fixes such as schema and crawler access can be done in days. Earning mentions and building answer-first content usually takes a few months, similar to SEO.
Can a small business do GEO?
Yes. Clear business facts, an updated Google Business Profile, good FAQ content and a few trusted listings go a long way, and none of them need a large budget.
